‘Now how does a Dutch guy like you, ……end up driving such a fine looking truck like that?’
Driving through California in my mates’ 1984 Toyota Tacoma Longbed pick up, I stopped at this gas station on US Route 395. Some guy walked up and asked me this very question. He told me it was the exact same truck that was his first car back in the day.
This actually happened quite often but only when I was inland, away from the coast. Somehow it seemed as if around the coast it was all about the New, the Shiny…..it felt a bit fake to be honest, and I felt a bit unsettled around it. (Which is strange in a way, because as a surfer the California coast was my goal). So this beauty of a truck didn’t get a second look anywhere out there.
But inland it was a different story, quite often people would come up to me and say that they either used to have truck just like that, or that someone’s dad used to have it….., and “did you know the was the first Japanese truck to outsell an American one”??
Which I didn’t…..
